As with all true wilderness journeys, the route and timing may shift depending on wildlife movement, weather, and local conditions. Any adjustments are made to protect safety, improve riding terrain, and give you the best possible experience.

Day 1: Arrival and Welcome Evening

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you will be met and transferred around thirty-five minutes to a private villa for your first night. Once you’ve settled in, you’ll meet the other riders joining the safari. In the evening, the lead guide joins the group for dinner and gives a short introduction to the journey ahead, setting the tone for the days to come.

Day 2: Horseback Ride into Arusha National Park

You’ll wake to tea and coffee, with breakfast available from early hours. After breakfast, around late morning, you drive about twenty minutes to the Arusha National Park gate, where the horses are waiting. Soon after mounting, you ride into one of East Africa’s most beautiful parks, where the vegetation changes dramatically from open grassland into deep rainforest.

This ride offers wonderful wildlife potential, with chances of seeing elephant and buffalo, a wide spread of plains game, and rarer forest species such as suni and red duiker. Birdlife can be exceptional, including the striking Hartlaub’s turaco. The experience becomes especially magical as you enter the canopy forest and the light softens around you. Lunch is served along the route, followed by time for a short rest before the ride continues through areas often known for leopard activity.

As the afternoon unfolds, you pass the historic house of Margarete Trappe, the legendary “Iron Lady” of the First World War era, whose stories and old riding paths still shape the feeling of this landscape. By late afternoon you arrive at camp at the foot of Mount Meru, in time for showers, sundowners, and dinner under the stars.

Day 3: Fig Tree Arch, Waterfalls, and Momella Lakes

This morning, the forest is often alive with the chatter of colobus monkeys. After breakfast, you ride toward the area associated with the classic film Hatari, before beginning a steady climb on horseback toward the famous Fig Tree Arch, an extraordinary natural formation large enough for several horses to pass beneath at once.

Lunch is enjoyed in the rainforest beside a waterfall, with cool air and deep green scenery around you. You are riding at roughly 2,000 meters above sea level at this point, and the landscape feels fresh and dramatic. After lunch, you ride back toward camp, passing another impressive waterfall along the way. Later, there is an optional vehicle excursion to the Momella Lakes, where hippos and water birds are often spotted, followed by sundowners before returning to camp for dinner.

Day 4: Ride Out of the Park Toward Kilimanjaro Country

After a hearty breakfast, you mount up and begin the journey out of Arusha National Park. Today’s ride heads east toward Mount Kilimanjaro, with Mount Meru slowly falling behind you. The day is long and scenic, crossing Tanzanian farmland and the Maasai steppe, where the landscape opens and cultural interactions become part of the story.

You ride early to make the most of the cooler hours, covering distance before the heat builds. Lunch is served under a large acacia, sometimes near a dam where Maasai water their cattle and where the horses can drink as well. A long mid-day break allows time to rest and regain energy. In the afternoon, the terrain begins to feel wilder again, opening into wildlife areas and broad plains, with the goal of reaching camp before sunset.

Day 5: Tracking Elephants on Horseback

You’ll wake early for tea and coffee before a bush breakfast is served. Today is dedicated to tracking the giants of this landscape, elephants. The terrain shifts between scrubland and acacia woodland, and the day is shaped by wildlife movement and the best riding conditions. You return to camp for lunch and head out again in the afternoon for another ride, then return before sunset for another peaceful evening in this remote and remarkable setting.

Day 6: The Seven Sisters, Sinya Village, and Mountain Views

After an early wake-up and an English breakfast, the safari begins heading toward the area known as the Seven Sisters. After crossing the seven hills, you pass through Sinya Village and continue toward lunch, served under shade along the route. The terrain changes beautifully through the day, moving between open grassland and canopy forest.

Wildlife opportunities can be excellent, with chances to see zebra, giraffe, and wildebeest, while keeping a careful eye out for the shy and special gerenuk, one of the region’s most elusive antelope. The night is spent in an astonishing location, and when the sky is clear, the feeling of standing beneath the presence of great mountains is unforgettable, with views often including Mount Meru, Longido, and the legendary Kilimanjaro dominating the horizon.

Day 7: Toward the Border and Another Elephant Day

You rise with the sun and begin riding toward the Kenyan border region, following elephant tracks and searching for moments where the wilderness feels completely alive. With luck and good tracking, you may encounter elephants from horseback, one of the most powerful experiences this safari can offer.

Tonight, camp is set overlooking the pans, where plains game remain alert and watchful, and the night sky often becomes one of the highlights of the entire journey. Between the wide-open landscape and the mountain silhouettes, the atmosphere can feel almost unreal.

Day 8: Farewell Morning and Departure

Your final morning begins with a generous breakfast, then the ride concludes as you head back toward civilization. Depending on road conditions, the drive back toward the airport takes around three hours. If you have a later international flight, a day room can be arranged at Kili Villa so you can freshen up and relax before departure. The safari ends, but the feeling of this journey, horseback travel through big landscapes under Kilimanjaro skies, tends to stay with you for a long time.

         REQUEST A QUOTE

Kilimanjaro Horseback Safari Overview An 8-Day Riding Journey from Mount Meru to the Kilimanjaro Plains with Kantara Safaris Please note that this itinerary is designed for riders who are confident in the saddle and comfortable with long riding days.
