Balloon Safari

Tanzania Hot Air Balloon Safaris with Kantara Safaris

Sunrise Flights Over Serengeti, Tarangire and Ruaha

A hot air balloon safari is one of the most unforgettable ways to experience Tanzania. It’s quiet, cinematic, and surprisingly emotional, the kind of morning where the world below feels ancient and perfectly ordered, and you’re floating above it all as the first light spreads across the landscape. With Kantara Safaris, balloon flights are arranged seamlessly, from early pick-up to a classic bush breakfast after landing.

While the Serengeti is the most famous setting for ballooning, Tanzania offers other exceptional balloon safari locations too, each with its own character. In Tarangire, the scenery becomes an immersion in baobabs, river lines, and wildlife-rich bush.  In Ruaha, the views are vast and rugged, with the Ruaha River and giant baobabs giving the flight a wilder, more remote feel, and many operators run this seasonally (often in the dry months).

Where balloon safaris are available in Tanzania

Serengeti National Park remains the classic choice, especially for travelers who want the endless plains, big cats, and the chance of migration season drama from the air. The overall routine is typically the same across operators: pre-dawn pickup, safety briefing, around one hour of flight time, a landing celebration, then a bush breakfast and certificate.

Tarangire National Park offers a very different mood from Serengeti, less about endless plains and more about atmosphere: baobabs, river corridors, and the sense of floating through a living painting.

Ruaha National Park is for travelers who want something more remote and wild, with sweeping southern landscapes and the Ruaha River system below. Some providers operate Ruaha balloon safaris seasonally (commonly around the dry season months).

Some operators also offer flights in the Grumeti/Singita area within the wider Serengeti ecosystem.

What the morning typically looks like

Most balloon safaris begin before sunrise. You’re collected from your lodge/camp, then transferred to the launch site where you’ll meet the pilot, receive a safety briefing, and watch the balloon inflate in the dawn light. Pick-up time varies by location and season, but around 5:00 AM is common for Serengeti-style operations.

At first light, you lift off and drift with the morning winds while the pilot controls altitude for the best views. The flight is usually about one hour, depending on conditions.  During the flight, you may skim low for intimate wildlife viewing and photography, then rise higher for wide panoramas that show the true scale of Tanzania’s wilderness.

After landing, the experience traditionally includes a celebratory toast (often sparkling wine) and a bush breakfast served in classic safari style. Many operators also provide a flight certificate as a keepsake.  After breakfast, you’re driven back to your safari vehicle or lodge area, often with game viewing along the way.

Why this experience is so special

Ballooning changes how you understand safari. From the ground, you watch wildlife within the landscape. From the air, you see how the landscape holds wildlife: the rivers, the grazing lines, the movement paths, the sheer scale. It’s also one of the most romantic safari add-ons available, and a favorite for photographers because the light is usually at its best and the perspective is unlike anything else.

Add a balloon safari to your itinerary

A balloon safari works beautifully as an upgrade to almost any Tanzania safari, whether you’re traveling as a couple, a family, or a solo explorer. Tell Kantara Safaris where you’re going (Serengeti, Tarangire, Ruaha, or a private reserve area), and we’ll advise on the best fit for your route and season, then handle the booking and timing so your morning runs smoothly.
